What is scar revision?

Scar revision is a customized treatment designed to improve the appearance of scars, making them less noticeable and more refined. Scars can result from surgeries, injuries, burns, or acne, leaving marks that may impact confidence.

Dr. Kimberly Carpin offers both surgical and non-surgical scar revision techniques, including:

  • Surgical Scar Revision: Removes or repositions scar tissue for smoother skin.
  • Laser Therapy: Treats skin texture, redness, and pigmentation.
  • Microneedling: Promotes collagen production and cellular turnover to smooth out depressed scars.
  • Steroid Injections: Reduces inflammation, flattens raised or thickened areas, and softens the scar tissue.

During your consultation, Dr. Carpin will recommend the most effective treatment based on the size, location, and type of scar.

How does it work?

What is the scar revision procedure like?

Unsightly scars can make you feel uncomfortable or unattractive. Scar revision is performed to improve the appearance of scars. Every scar treatment is approached differently, but the overall goal is the same. To create a thin, well-concealed, and less painful scar.

Scar treatments range from surgical excision, laser therapy, microneedling, or steroid injections. The final goal is to create a less noticeable scar, but unfortunately, a scar can never be completely removed. However, Dr. Carpin’s advanced and personalized techniques can significantly improve the appearance of your scar.

  • Keloid Scars: Overgrown, raised scars that extend beyond the original injury.
  • Contracture Scars: Tight scars that may limit movement, often caused by burns.

What are the benefits of scar revision?

Scar revision softens and refines the texture, size, and color of scars, blending them more seamlessly with the surrounding skin. By tailoring the approach to each patient’s unique needs, Dr. Carpin can address a variety of concerns, from raised or thickened scars to those caused by injury or surgery.

Beyond the cosmetic benefits, scar revision often improves skin flexibility and comfort, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality. Dr. Carpin’s patient-focused approach ensures you receive the most effective treatment for noticeable, natural results.

Am I a candidate for scar revision?

Scar revision can provide significant improvements in the appearance of several types of scars. Candidates for scar revision should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the results. While scar revision may not completely remove a scar, it can greatly improve its appearance.

The most challenging scars tend to be those that are thick, raised (hypertrophic), or keloid scars. Additionally, scars that are very large, deeply rooted, or located in high-tension areas of the body can be more difficult to treat. Despite these challenges, Dr. Carpin’s modern techniques can make a significant difference in reducing the visibility of even the most complex scars, and patients tend to be very happy with the outcome of their treatment. During your consultation, Dr. Carpin will assess your scar and recommend the most appropriate treatment.

Scar Revision Recovery

Recovery varies depending on the treatment method. Following a surgical treatment, patients may experience mild swelling and bruising at the treatment site. Non-surgical treatments come with minimal downtime, with gradual improvement seen over several sessions.

Dr. Carpin will provide detailed aftercare instructions to ensure optimal healing and results. A silicone gel or silicone adhesive strip may be applied to the scar to help soften the scar and minimize its appearance. Silicone treatments should continue for about 6 to 8 weeks. The scar should also be shielded from sunlight, or sunscreen should be applied during its first year when it is sensitive to darkening. If the scar appears to be worsening, please let Dr. Carpin know so she can start additional scar therapy.

Results That Restore, Outcomes That Last

Scar Revision Results

Scar revision treatments produce gradual and long-lasting results. Surgical revisions may show noticeable improvement after initial healing, while laser or injectable treatments deliver continuous improvement over several weeks. Most scars will appear smoother, less prominent, and more refined, helping you feel confident in your skin again.
